Garlic Bread Tear and Share!

ingredients

  • 1 1/4 (5/8) tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 (1/2) tablespoons sugar
  • 1 (1/2) cups warm water
  • 1/2 (1/4) tablespoon salt
  • 1/6 cup (1/12) vegetable oil
  • 3-3.5 (1.5-2) cups all-purpose flour *Measurements in parenthesis are for half recipe*
    For Garlic Sauce
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic

directions

  1. Dissolve yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup warm water. Let stand until height of foam is equal to level of water.
  2. Combine yeast mixture with oil, salt, and one cup of flour. Stir well.
  3. Slowly incorporate flour and remaining water, alternating between the two. The dough may still be a bit sticky.
  4. Knead, by hand, on a floured surface, for 8 minutes, adding additional flour as needed.
  5. Place dough in a lightly-greased bowl.
  6. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise, in a warm place*, for about 20-30 minutes.
  7. Punch dough down and shape into a loaf.
  8. After shaped, cut three lines all the way through the dough and separate, but not apart.
  9. Braid the sections of the loaf as you would hair, twisting the end of the dough under.
  10. Place loaf onto a large, lightly greased, baking sheet.
  11. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  12. Cover the loaf with plastic wrap (possible to use the same sheet) and allow to rise for another 20-30 minutes.
  13. After rising, melt a stick of butter and roughly 2 tbsp of minced garlic in the microwave.
  14. With a basting brush, or by hand, cover the loaf in the mixture, do not worry about pooling in the braid, as it will cook in.
  15. Cook for 25 minutes, or until the top of the loaf is golden brown
  16. Let the bread cool for a couple of minutes.
  17. Pull apart and enjoy! *I usually set the oven to preheat and leave the door open*
